Boozy Watermelon Aguas Frescas

Sugarland’s Sour Watermelon Moonshine is a delightful twist on traditional moonshine, capturing the essence of summer in a jar. This moonshine offers a bold and refreshing flavor profile that combines the juicy sweetness of ripe watermelon with a tangy, sour kick. At 60 proof (30% alcohol by volume), it provides a smooth yet potent experience.

The first sip reveals a burst of watermelon flavor, reminiscent of biting into a fresh slice on a hot day. The sour notes add an unexpected but pleasant twist, balancing the sweetness perfectly. This makes it an excellent choice for those who enjoy fruity spirits with a bit of a zing.

One of the standout features of Sugarland’s Sour Watermelon Moonshine is its versatility. It can be enjoyed straight, over ice, or as a base for creative cocktails. Its vibrant flavor pairs well with mixers like lemonade, soda, or even a splash of tonic water. We made a boozy version of a watermelon aguas frescas with it:

Boozy Watermelon Aguas Frescas (by Simple Cocktails)

  • In a Tom Collins glass filled with ice, add:
  • 2 oz Sugarland’s Sour Watermelon Moonshine
  • Top with strained, fresh watermelon aguas frescas and stir
  • Spoon reserved watermelon pulp on the top
  • Add 2 dashes of cucumber bitters (we used Bitter Truth)
  • Garnish with mint and lime

Overall, Sutherland’s Moonshine Sour Watermelon is a must-try for moonshine enthusiasts and those looking to explore unique, flavored spirits. Its refreshing taste and balanced profile make it a perfect addition to any summer gathering or a fun twist for your next cocktail party. Whether you’re a seasoned moonshine drinker or a curious newcomer, this sour watermelon variant is sure to impress.

Piña Colada Fizz

One of the more exciting jars I found when I opened my Sugarlands sponsorship shipment was their Piña Colada Moonshine. I’ve been thinking for a few weeks about a great cocktail to make with it, and one day I discovered a new Trader Joe’s product that I figured would really make it shine (pun intended): “Island Colada” Mineral Water, a fizzy, sugarless water that I knew would work well with this moonshine.

So I developed a recipe for what I call a Piña Colada Fizz using Sugarlands’ Piña Colada Moonshine, Island Colada Mineral Water, and a splash of banana liqueur. It’s an AMAZING warm-weather cocktail:

Piña Colada Fizz (by Greg Mays)

  • in a collins glass filled with ice, add:
  • 2 oz Sugarlands Piña Colada Moonshine
  • 1/4 oz banana liqueur (creme de banane)
  • top with Trader Joe’s Island Colada Mineral Water (plain mineral water will do, too)
  • stir briefly
  • garnish with cherries

2 Black Eyes Cocktail

2 Black Eyes Cocktail

Moonshine nowadays is another name for an unaged whiskey, sometimes also called silver whiskey or white lightnin’. Here’s a simple moonshine recipe for the fighter in all of us:

2 Black Eyes (by Greg Mays)
  • 3 oz moonshine
  • 1 1/2 oz blackberry liqueur (I used Clear Creek)
  • 4 dashes of Fee Bros. Whiskey Barrel Aged Bitters (buy at Amazon)
  • stir with ice and strain into 2 chilled cocktail glasses
  • garnish with brass knuckles and a switchblade

Make sure you make 2 of these. Otherwise, you’ll just have one black eye, and what’s the point of that?
