We talk about a seminal summer drink: The Margarita! History of the Margarita, including early versions of it. Are frozen drinks frowned upon? Daisy -> Sour -> Margarita. Agave syrup as a sweetener? We make Gary “Gaz” Regan and Robert Hess’s Margarita recipes and do some comparison.
A big welcome to Sugarlands Distilling as our sponsor!

Hi guys – very nice. I like the new format. Podcasts can get stale after a while, so I think it’s a good idea in general to switch things up now and then.
It’s funny, I’m pretty sure it was Robert Hess’s Margarita and Sidecar recipes that got me started making cocktails at home. I can remember talking to a friend at work about it and deciding that if somebody named Drinkboy liked it, it had to be good. And it was.
I’ll have to give Regan’s version a try. I’ve had ones with Agave instead of Triple Sec, and liked the drink, but IMO that’s not really a Margarita any more than you can make a Martini with no vermouth.
Anyway, just thinking out loud, maybe the new format would lend itself to a vermouth exploration episode? I got some Vya recently and it is just wonderful. There are so many good options these days. Maybe a topic for Fall weather.
Cheers!
Tim,
We really appreciate that and we’re excited to be “teachers” for a season.
That’s a GREAT idea about vermouth (we’re totally gonna do it) and, yeah, Vya is amazing. A fresh, quality bottle of vermouth is a very great thing.
